It will only happen once in our lifetime. A landmark decision made a century ago is being celebrated this year, the 100 year anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Forest Service.

The communities surrounding the Stanislaus National Forest headquartered in Sonora, California are planning a centennial event like no other! On October 15, 2005, at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora, we will celebrate the first 100 years of the National Forests. This event will highlight the many connections between each of us and our National Forests: from grazing to bird watching; water developments to hiking; from logging to nature photography, and from off road vehicle use to finding solitude.

Whether we live next door or far away from them, National Forests enrich the quality of our lives. They provide jobs and special places to connect with nature. They yield the water we drink, the homes we live in, the electricity we use and even the personality of our communities. How would our lives and livelihoods be affected today if 100 years ago, these lands had not been set aside for the greatest good, of the greatest number, in the long run?
